Reclaimed, antique lumber is a wonderful thing — tight grain, amazing color and rich character.
One great source of such treasures is Bingham Lumber, in Brookline, NH.
Tom Bingham, third-generation owner of the mill, spent hours with members of the Guild of New Hampshire Woodworkers Saturday, describing how the company finds, treats and reconditions beams, barn boards and other old wood for furniture, flooring and other uses.
They search out choice antique lumber from around the country to reclaim. Saturday, a couple mill employees were hard at work wielding hammers and chisels to remove old cut nails and other fasteners from barn beams. One board just cleaned up was peppered with buckshot.
If you love wood with character, Bingham Lumber’s post and beam showroom and 20,000 square foot lumber barn will provide lots of options.
A thank you to Tom, for his detailed tour and willingness to answer lots of arcane wood questions.
